Abstract

This book provides a multifaceted account of cannabis, a plant that is used widely both recreationally and as a medicine, as it has been over many centuries. Thus, it presents a brief account of the pharmacological history of cannabis and describes the cultivation and genotypic variability of this plant, the national and international regulation of cannabis and its many “cannabinoid” constituents, and the chemical structures and known pharmacological properties of some of these constituents, as well as their pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and forensic detection. In addition, it considers the benefits and risks to patients of taking cannabis-derived “phytocannabinoids” and synthetic cannabinoids that have already emerged as licensed medicines, describes pharmacological actions and effects that seem to underlie the approved therapeutic uses of these cannabinoids, and identifies an ever growing number of new wide-ranging potential clinical applications for phytocannabinoids. Also discussed in this book are the sought-after and adverse effects of cannabis when it is used as a recreational drug, how these adverse effects might be minimized, and the existence in certain countries of “coffee shops” or dispensaries from which cannabis can be purchased “legally” either for recreational use or for self-medication. The final chapter describes the emergence as recreational drugs of synthetic cannabinoids, considers whether these “designer drugs” are more harmful than cannabis, discusses the limitations of their current legal control, and describes their forensic detection. -- Publisher

Opioid and Cannabis in Pain Control is the result of studies performed by the Pharmacy Department and the “Centro Interdipartimentale di Ricerca in Farmacoeconomia e Farmacoutilizzazione” (CIRFF) of the University of Naples, “Federico II”. This book is aimed to those who work in a pharmacy and who, scholars, teachers or students, are interested in delve into the issue. The text analyzes different topics with an interdisciplinary approach. A large part is devoted to the chemical and pharmacological aspects related to this topic. Subsequently, the text focuses the theme, still very debated, of using opioids and Cannabis in therapy through an exhaustive analysis of the entire existing legislation: from the first laws promulgated by the Kingdom of Italy until the last ministerial circulars by Italian republic. Finally yet importantly, an important part of the book focuses on medical and therapeutic interpretation with regard to the effects on pain control, where opioids and Cannabis are not only a fruitful frontier of research, but also a consolidated and effective tool to counteract some types of pain

Abstract

Abstract

This book examines the effectiveness of a unique area of patient care, cannabis use in medicine. While many American states have legalized medical marijuana, the FDA still has not approved it as a treatment due to a lack of studies to prove its validity.Countries such as Canada and Uruguay, on the other hand, have legalized cannabis. This book aids in accelerating the medical legitimacy of cannabis through comprehensive coverage of its uses, legality, pharmacology, and potential issues. Organized into three parts, the book begins with topics that function as an introduction to cannabis for medical use, such as patient assessments, the role of genetics, evidence-based therapy reviews, legal aspects, and pharmacology. Subsequent chapters then delve into the practical applications of medical cannabis use, including treatment for gastrointestinal disorders, neurological diseases, rheumatic diseases, and pain management. The book's final section features crucial discussions on the potential complications and adverse events in cannabis use, as well as occupation and pediatric considerations. Nuanced and timely, Cannabis Use in Medicine, is a vital resource for medical practitioners of all specialties looking to add cannabis to their repertoire of therapies.

Abstract

Although primarily used today as one of the most prevalent illicit leisure drugs, the use of Cannabis sativa L., commonly referred to as marijuana, for medicinal purposes has been reported for more than 5000 years. Marijuana use has been shown to create numerous health problems, and, consequently, the expanding use beyond medical purposes into recreational use (abuse) resulted in control of the drug through international treaties. Much research has been carried out over the past few decades following the identification of the chemical structure of THC in 1964. The purpose of Marijuana and the Cannabinoids is to present in a single volume the comprehensive knowledge and experience of renowned researchers and scientists. Each chapter is written independently by an expert in his/her field of endeavor, ranging from the botany, the constituents, the chemistry and pharmacokinetics, the effects and consequences of illicit use on the human body, to the therapeutic potential of the cannabinoids.
